Cities with Pride

Encouraging city authorities to make concrete commitments and take action to better support LGBTQI+ communities around the world

What's the challenge?

Cities have always been places that LGBTQI+ people move to find community, safety and services. However LGBTQI+ people around the world still face unique barriers and challenges from housing discrimination to poorly designed services and loneliness and isolation.

How can we address this?

Identify and better understand the challenges and issues queer people face in urban communities around the world
Build networks and partnerships between civil society organisations and other stakeholders to bring about change
Develop a Cities with Pride Charter that commits authorities to improving the inclusion of LGBTQI+ people in their city

What will the initiative include?

  • LGBTQI+ community organisations - we have already established working relationships with a number of local LGBTQI+ community organisations in 10 countries including Mexico, Brazil, Lebanon, India, Ecuador, Nigeria, Canada, the UK, Tanzania, Finland and Turkey. We want to work with these groups to gain from their local knowledge and experience of working with LGBTQI+ individuals and to deliver the activities listed below.

  • Research and Policy Brief - we will conduct community level research to gather data and stories of LGBTQI+ experiences around:

    • Housing discrimination and homelessness

    • Access to sexual health and other support services

    • Personal safety and violence

    • Public and community spaces

  • High-level Stakeholder engagement - we will leverage existing contacts and relationships at high level global organisations including UN Habitat and the World Health Organisation to highlight the issues LGBTQI+ people face and gain their support for a Cities with Pride Charter that cities can sign up to.

  • Developing a Cities with Pride Charter - working with grassroots organisations in cities around the world, we want to co-create a Charter that cities can sign up to, declaring themselves Cities with Pride, and committing to clear actions that improve the inclusion of LGBTQI+ people in their city.

What are the next steps?

We are currently looking for partners interested in supporting the initiative with knowledge and resources. We aim to undertake community based research in 5 cities around the world during 2024 to inform an initial policy briefing paper to highlight the main issues LGBTQI+ communities face.
