Walking Community Toolkit
Tools and guidance for community groups to create inclusive and enjoyable walking routes that connect people and places in a healthy and sustainable way
What's the issue?
Walking is great! It's social, healthy and sustainable. By encouraging walking, we can build community spirit, improve health and reduce car dependency.
To encourage everyone to walk more, we will work with community groups that bring together individuals often excluded and marginalised from community life. By identifying the specific barriers they face and co-creating accessible and enjoyable walking routes that work for them, we can create healthier and more inclusive communities.

Let's give community groups the tools they need to plan and launch inclusive, accessible, safe and enjoyable walking routes in their neighbourhood!
How can we address this?
Build community awareness of the social, health and sustainability benefits of walking and active travel
Develop a toolkit to identify safe and accessible streets and paths that connect green spaces and social points of interest in the community
Support community groups to launch safe, welcoming and accessible walking routes with branding, signage and maps
What will the toolkit include?
-
Community Leader Training - equipping community leaders with the knowledge and confidence to engage with stakeholders, plan and implement the initiative.

-
Community Asset Mapping - a workshop methodology for community groups to identify relevant points of interest that could be connected via a marked walking route.

-
Route Assessment + Planning - easy to follow guidance that assesses streets and crossings for different kinds of accessibility barriers to ensure the final route is as inclusive as possible.

-
Way-finding Templates - templates to create street signage, floor stickers, community art and other interesting ways of marking points and pointing the way along the walking route. QR codes on signage can provide access to more information online.

-
Launch Events + Activities - guidance and suggestions on how to launch the walking route, share illustrated maps, encourage participants and plan events and activities including walking tours.

What are the next steps?
We are currently developing the contents of the toolkit and are looking for industry partners interested in supporting the initiative with knowledge and resources. We aim to guide the first set of communities to create their inclusive walking routes during 2024 before further rolling out the approach around the world.
